When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle engage in some casual P.D.A or the Queen name drops someone you don’t expect, the royals are praised for seeming more down-to-earth, a bit happier in public than royal protocol might usually allow. But no one in the royal family excels at unbridled joy as much as Prince George, as proven by this newly released portrait commemorating his fifth birthday on July 22.
The photograph by Matt Porteous was taken just after the christening of Prince Louis on July 9, where Porteous was on hand to capture personal family portraits, including one especially engaging one of Prince Louis released last week. George gave a wide-mouthed grin in one of the formal family portraits taken by Matt Holyoak, but it was nothing compared to the soon-to-be-five-year-old goofball we see here, cheesing for the camera and seeming to say “I know today is all about my baby brother, but don’t forget I’m the original scene-stealer.”
As Vanity Fair’s Katie Nicholl reported this week, George is likely spending his big day on the Caribbean island of Mustique, where the entire Cambridge crew can escape the public eye after a particularly busy few months. Given that George’s year has included traveling to Europe, starting school, welcoming a new brother as well as a new aunt, he’s got plenty to celebrate.
