About
…this blog
The title is a bit overreaching. Journalists have yet to adequately cover the world’s biggest, most important and most exciting beat.
It’s daunting enough to understand environmental issues. Throw in the additional task of explaining them to the public and you’ve bought yourself a lot more trouble.
Now do it on deadline.
Hopefully this blog eases the task.
…me
My name is David Poulson. I work at the Knight Center for Environmental Journalism at Michigan State University where I teach undergraduate and graduate students to cover the environment. I also organize and teach workshops to help professional journalists improve their environmental reporting.
I came to MSU in 2003 after a 22-year career as a newspaper reporter and editor, much of it covering the environment.
I’m concerned about journalism and fascinated by new media. I also created and edit the Great Lakes Echo.
…the banner
It was taken by Amol Pavangadkar, a colleague who also teaches at the Knight Center. It’s a view of the meltwater run-off from Exit Glacier at the Harding icefield near Seward, Alaska.
Amol shot the image during a 2008 journalism workshop we led called Alaska: Reporting on the Climate Frontier.
